Flexible learning spaces are playing an important role in student success at St Nicholas’ Primary School. The new £10 million school opened in 2018 as part of East Dunbartonshire Council’s Primary School Improvement Programme (PSIP).
With one main 32,000 square foot building, contractor Morgan Sindall Construction created 17 flexible, open classrooms without internal doors for greater collaboration.
This is complemented by landscaped outdoor learning areas, with Broxap involved in the design, manufacture and installation of bespoke Newcastle Monopitch Canopies so students can benefit from the positive learning environment all year round.Four freestanding canopies were created for the project with clear multi-wall polycarbonate roof cladding.
With Larch wood cladding to the front and sides and a galvanised steel frame, powder coated Quartz Grey, the canopies also provide a high quality entrance area for the children.
Pupils line up under the structures each morning to directly access their classrooms from the playground.
St Nicholas’ Primary School was designed with a 450-pupil capacity, replacing two former primary schools, St Andrew’s and St Joseph’s, which were in need of modernisation.
It was the fifth school to be built through the council’s PSIP with the first, Lairdsland Primary School, serving as the design template for subsequent schools.
Working in collaboration with Morgan Sindall, Broxap helped to establish design consistency by also manufacturing and installing six individual timber clad canopies for Holy Trinity Primary School under the PSIP in 2017.
